As a Core National Curriculum Subject, Mathematics has a high profile at Witton Park, and a syllabus which is highly relevant in today’s world.

Key Stage 3

Years 7,8 and 9 study the popular Collins new maths framework scheme which covers the important curriculum areas of:

  • number
  • algebra
  • shape, space and measure
  • data handling

as well as allowing pupils to undertake investigations and applying maths to real life situations.
Other texts and a wide range of physical resources are introduced according to the needs of particular children, classes, and topics being studied.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) pupils move on to studying GCSE Mathematics, again with a variety of supporting texts and activities.  Pupils complete 3 modular exams to achieve their GCSE.

The Mathematics teaching team has high expectations of all pupils to achieve their best: classwork and homework play an important role in the development of pupils, and in our assessment of their progress and individual needs.  All pupils are also set homework using the website www.mymaths.co.uk

Intervention
The mathematics faculty also runs regular KS3 and KS4 revision classes and provides other intervention support strategies for grade C/D borderline pupils.

UKMT
The school regularly participates in junior, intermediate and team maths challenges- in conjunction with UKMT

Enterprise

This year pupils were involved in a rafting project.  In teams of 4/5 they had to build a raft and then float it in the river Blakewater in Witton Park.  This required teamwork skills, problem solving and creativity.

Partner Primary Links
Every year the Maths faculty runs a maths activity day for year 6 pupils.  This consists of activities including origami, tetrahedron building and ICT maths games.

The Maths faculty also runs KS2 revision sessions with our partner primaries.

In the summer term, the Maths faculty visits our partner primary schools to run mini-maths challenges with year 6 pupils.  Also at the end of term, more fun activities are held during summer school-again for our primary school pupils.

Community Links
The maths faculty intends to run an adult personal finance course, further details of this will be announced in due course.
