Learning support aims to provide the necessary support for all students to achieve their full potential and is a key contributor to the improving academic performance of the school.

The early identification of a need provides high quality intervention from a team of six full time teachers and fifteen support assistants.

A range of strategies includes:

  • In class support and targeted withdrawal to support the learning of key skills
  • There is a well resourced area including a suite of networked computers and the most up to date reading and learning materials.
  • All students supported by the faculty have an Individual Education Action Plan and are regularly monitored, evaluated and reviewed.
  • Students and parents are actively involved in the process are and keen to set their own challenging targets.
  • Modern facilities aim to provide full access for disabled students.
  • Fully integrated support is offered to students for whom English is an additional language, by a specialist teacher and bilingual assistant.
  • The social inclusion suite offers the opportunity for students with behavioural and learning difficulties to maintain full access to the curriculum.
  • The faculty provides a student counselling and education welfare service.

  • Adult and student mentors give focused support to vulnerable and disaffected students.
  • Parents and family members are involved in Family Literacy and the Parents as Educators Programme.
  • The faculty was the first in Lancashire to achieve the National Basic Skills Award.
  • High quality resources are used in paired and independent reading sessions for students throughout the school during morning registration
  • The Learning Resource Area is fully staffed at lunchtimes and before and after school. These sessions support students in learning activities.

  • As part of the Excellence in Cities initiative, 5 Learning Mentors work with students showing signs of disaffection or under achievement.

  • A number of students are identified as being Gifted and Talented. A programme of enrichment activities are organised for this group of students.
