Excellent Facilities

 

The faculty has 5 extremely well equipped rooms, housing in excess of 120 personal computer connected to the whole school network.  A range of up-to-date industry standard software is available on all machines.  Each room is also equipped with a laser print, ceiling digital mounted projector and have interactive whiteboards.

 

Key Stage 3

All students spend a minimum of 1 hour a week using computers.

 

Year 7

Students develop practical skills in a business context.  Units include multimedia, data handling and control.

 

Year 8

The key stage 3 Strategy will enable pupils to develop their skills further and begin to work more independently.  Students will have access to a range of specialist hardware including state of the art digital cameras and data logging equipments.

 

 

Year 9 

Ocr nationals

 

This course will be covered in year 9, 10 and 11. Successful completion of the course will allow pupils to achieve the equivalent of 2 GCSE’s.

In year 9 pupils will have 1 hour a week and in year 10 and 11 2 hours a week.

Pupils will be expected to complete coursework in lessons, at home, after school or lunch time clubs.
The benefit to pupils of completing this course is that they are able to work at their own pace and improve their work as many times as they feel necessary.
Units pupils will study
Unit 1 ICT skills for business
Candidates will be able to show that they understand:
 
  • good working practices, including the organisation of files using appropriate file and directory/folder names and the regular backing up of files
  • features of email software
  • methods of searching for information on the internet
  • methods of integrating different types of files into a document or presentation
  • the appropriate software to use for different tasks
  • methods of storing, retrieving and analysing data.
 
Unit 2 Webpage creation
 
Candidates will be able to:
 
  • design a multimedia website
  • create a multimedia website
  • create hyperlinks
  • create interactive elements
  • create a user form for capturing user feedback
  • test a website and act on the findings
  • evaluate a website they have created.
 
 
 
Unit 4 Design and produce multimedia products
 
Candidates will be able to:
 
  • review several existing multimedia products
  • design a multimedia product
  • source and store suitable multimedia elements
  • create the multimedia product
  • seek feedback and suggest improvements.

BTEC First Certificate in Business

 

Introduced to Witton Park in September 2007, the BTEC First Certificate in Business has been designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the business sector, focusing on providing opportunities for learners to acquire technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding which are transferable and will enable individuals to meet changing circumstances.

 

The BTEC First Certificate is a NQF level 2 qualification equivalent to 2 GCSEs at grade A*-C.  The BTEC will lead to many varied post 16 progression routes – our Connexions officer can provide further information.

ABOUT THE UNITS

Each unit delivered is designed to achieve specific learning outcomes as follows:

 

Unit 1 – Exploring Business Purposes

This unit looks at the financial aspects of running a business.  On completion of this unit, learners should:

 

1.  Understand the nature of business and ownership

2.  Understand the classification of business activities

3.  Understand business aims and objectives in different sectors

4.  Know the main functional areas that support business organisations

 

Unit 2 – Developing Customer Relations

This unit will develop learner’s understanding of customer service.   On completion of this unit, learners should:

 

1.  Understand how customer service is provided in business

2.  Be able to apply appropriate presentation and interpersonal

     skills in customer service situations

3.  Know how consistent and reliable customer service contributes to

     customer satisfaction

4.      Know how to monitor and evaluate customer service within an

     organisation

Unit 3 – Investigating Financial Control

This unit looks at the financial aspects of running a business. On completion of this unit, learners will be able to:

 

1.     Understand the costs, revenue and profit for a business operation

2.     Know how businesses use break even analysis

3.     Be able to prepare a cash flow forecast

4.     Understand ways of recording financial transactions

CIDA QUALIFICATION – KS4 ICT
 
This is a qualification from Edexcel. The Certificate in Digital Applications has the equivalent point score of 2 GCSEs. Grades can be awarded from A* to C in Level 2
 
 How are students work graded:-
DiDA units and levels are graded: Pass, Credit, Merit, Distinction. Each unit is marked out of 42 raw  marks.  To achieve:
 
      Pass, candidate need to reach 18
      For a Credit , 24
      For a merit, 30 and
      For a Distinction, 36
 
At Level 2 the equivalencies with GCSE are:
Distinction: A*, Merit: A, Credit: B and Pass: C.
 
Assessment is via a Summative Project Brief this is set by the board. It is suggested that this will take a minimum of 100 hours. Pupils complete this brief which is typically 10+ documents.
 
They then arrange the documents in an e-portfolio. This allows all pupils to show case it electronically to the examiner.
 
The units that will be studied
 
 
Unit 1: Using ICT
 
 Using ICT is the keystone for the Award, Certificate and Diploma.  The main elements of this course are:
 
      Using information sources
      Working with information
      Presenting information
     
      Print and digital publishing
      Creating an e portfolio
Project planning, monitoring and evaluation
 
 
Unit 4: ICT in Enterprise
 
Unit 4 gives students the chance to apply business techniques such as market research, financial planning and product promotion to their skills in digital applications.  It develops important real-world skills, including communication, problem solving and decision making. 
 
The course includes:
 
      Exploring business opportunities
      Preparing and presenting business plans
      Business communications
      Advertising and promotions
      Project planning, monitoring and evaluation
Creating an e-business plan
